Icon Conference 2016: Turn and Face the Change: Conservation in the 21st Century took place from 15-17th June 2016 in Conference Aston, Birmingham.

The third triennial conference discussed challenges facing conservation and explored the ways in which the heritage sector is adapting to current and future trends. This high-profile event is the UK's only conference that engages with the full spectrum of cultural heritage conservation.

Icon16 brought together attendees from across the industry to examine how conservation is placed in the 21st century in a series of plenary and specialist group sessions. The conference showcased the very latest in international professional practice and approach.

Free Conference Tours

Tours of the Staffordshire Hoard conservation lab, the Museums Collections Centre and the Coffin Works were offered to conference delegates at no charge.

Clothworkers' Grants

Icon Conference 2016: Turn & Face the Change brought together attendees from across the industry to examine how conservation is placed in the 21st century in a series of plenary and specialist group sessions. The conference showcased the very latest in international professional practice and approach. 

  • Opening Reception – 7.30pm, Wednesday 15 June: FREE
    Delegates celebrated the opening of the conference in style while exploring the industrial heritage of Birmingham. The Past Gallery at Birmingham's award-winning Thinktank museum features impressive steam machines and remarkable original vehicles.
  • Conference Dinner – 7.30pm, Thursday 16 June
    The Conference Dinner took place at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery's beautifully renovated Edwardian Tearooms, offering a fantastic opportunity to relax and network with fellow conservators within a unique and historic setting.

Trade Fair

The Icon16 Trade Fair took place at the Steelhouse Suites and Litchfield Lounge of the freshly refurbished Conference venue. The two-day event offered a valuable opportunity to meet conservators, collections managers, curators, archivists, museum directors, heads of operations, property managers, regional and national advisors, lecturers, students and others in the field of heritage conservation.
