Icon is a registered charity. Our Board of Trustees have ultimate responsibility for the organisation including compliance, finance, strategy and staff. Icon Trustees are both charity trustees and directors
All Trustees are Icon Members and must abide by Icon's Values and Code of Conduct.
James is a Chartered Surveyor who served as an Equity Partner and Board Member of an international real estate advisory practice. He has held non-executive positions in the NHS, Higher Education, Government and various commercial organisations. He is currently a Council Member at Durham University, a trustee of the York Foundation for Conservation & Craftsmanship and Chair of York Museums Trust. James brings extensive commercial leadership and governance experience to Icon, along with a lifelong passion for cultural heritage.
Adam is a conservation professional with a passion for adaptive reuse of historic buildings and contemporary conservation theory and ethics. He holds a BA in History of Art and Material Studies from UCL and an MA in Principles of Conservation from the Institute of Archaeology, UCL. He is currently working in the ecclesiastical heritage field as Church Buildings Officer and Secretary to the Diocesan Advisory Committee at the Diocese of Gloucester (C of E). Adam is a full member of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC) and sits on the council of the Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust. In 2011, under the auspices of the International Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (IIC), he instigated the biennial Student and Emerging Conservator Conferences.
Sarah Cove is an Accredited paintings conservator, technical art historian and an Accredited NADFAS lecturer. She is a fellow of IIC and BAPCR and deputy chair of BAPCR. Following a BA (Hons) in Art History, she trained at the Courtauld Institute, Victoria & Albert Museum and the National Portrait Gallery. Sarah freelances for heritage and private clients, specialising in British paintings, especially portraiture, landscape and oil sketches. In 1986 she established the Constable Research Project. Sarah is also a member of the Steering Group of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site.
Megan de Silva studied Conservation of Objects for Museums and Archaeology and went on to be Social History Conservator at St Fagans National History Museum in Cardiff. She worked at the National Museum of Scotland before returning to Wales as Conservator for Monmouthshire Museums Service. Megan completed an MA in Professional Conservation and Collections Care at Cardiff University and sits on the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Committee for Wales. She also belongs to the stewardship group of the Federation of Welsh Museums, helping to organise the Conservation Matters in Wales Conference.
Sophie Rowe ACR specialises in organic artefacts conservation and collections care. She has worked in a wide range of contexts from national museums (the British Museum, National Museum of Denmark) and the private sector (Museum Conservation Services) to university museums. She currently co-ordinates conservation and collections care activities across the consortium of eight University of Cambridge museums, and is an Arts Council Accreditation entor for two volunteer-run museums. Sophie is particularly interested in developing networks to raise standards and get maximum value from limited resources.
After graduating in Fine Art, Peter Martindale ACR undertook a three-year apprenticeship in the conservation of wall paintings at Canterbury Cathedral Wall Paintings Workshop. He then worked for a number of conservators in the private sector on wall paintings, paintings and stone before founding his own company in 2003. Over the years, Peter has played an active part in Icon Stone and Wall Paintings Group, co-organising a number of conferences. He is an Icon Mentor, member of the Science and Heritage sub-committee of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a trained yoga teacher.
Jenny Williamson is an Accredited freelance paintings conservator at the National Library of Wales and lecturer at Aberystwyth University. After graduating from Cambridge University she trained in Conservation of Easel Paintings at the Courtauld Institute of Art. She moved to Wales in 1989 to work as Paintings Conservator at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea. Jenny established the first painting conservation studio in the National Library of Wales, and began teaching conservation issues to fine art and art history students at the university. Jenny organised Sharing Conservation Decisions conferences in 2011 and 2013 at NLW.
Frances Graupner is a commercial lawyer with a special focus on advising on art and cultural projects generally and on education for careers in the creative arts. She has wide experience of working with major corporations and charities as well as higher education institutions. She now specialises in supporting the enterprise activities of the University of the Arts London, a global leader in the art and design sector with a diverse mix of constituent colleges including Camberwell, which teaches conservation, Central St Martins, Chelsea, London College of Communication, London College of Fashion and Wimbledon.
Mel Houston ACR is the National Preventive Conservator for the National Trust for Scotland. Mel has worked for the Trust in this role for the last seven years and has also been an Icon Intern Supervisor as well as a PACR Mentor during this time. Mel completed under graduate and post graduate degrees in science and arts before gaining an MA in Preventive Conservation. She is on the Pest Odyssey Steering Committee for IPM in the UK and lectures in IPM at the Centre for Textile Conservation at the University of Glasgow.
Ruth Howlett is a communications specialist with 14 years’ experience in media and public relations. Currently Head of Media and PR at Historic Royal Palaces, Ruth is a graduate of Queen Mary, University of London, holds a postgraduate Diploma in Public Relations from the Chartered Institute of Public Relations, a Professional Certificate in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing and is studying part-time for a Master’s degree in Corporate Communications. Ruth joined Icon as a co-opted Trustee in 2016.
Lorraine Finch is an accredited archives conservator. She is Secretary of the Icon Photographic Materials Group, a committee member of the Icon Documentation Group and an assessor for the Icon PACR and the ICRI accreditation schemes. Following her MA Conservation at Camberwell College of Arts she was employed at the University of Southampton, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and the National Army Museum. In 2003 she established LF Conservation and Preservation which provides conservation and preservation to institutions and individuals of archives. Lorraine specialises in the conservation and preservation of photographic material.
Lucie Mascord ACR is a natural history conservator working for Lancashire Conservation Studios and as a freelancer. Training as an anatomist, Lucie moved into conservation through a route of intensive work-based training amongst which she undertook an Icon Internship and was rewarded a Queen Elizabeth Scholarship. Her expertise sees her working extensively across the heritage sector, with clients including the National Trust, national and independent museums. Lucie is also involved with Icon as a PACR assessor, and a volunteer for the Conduct Register. Lucie is the conservation representative for the Natural Sciences Collection Association (NatSCA), recently establishing a sub-group of natural history conservators to develop and support the specialism.
Fiona McLees graduated from the Masters Conservation programme at Camberwell College of Arts, London in 2010. She is now an accredited Paper Conservator working at the Bodleian Libraries, Oxford, prior to which she gained experience working at a wide variety of institutions including the Chester Beatty Library, the National Archives, Imperial War Museum, and Tate. Since 2013 she has been active on the Icon Book & Paper Group committee, culminating in chairing the organisation committee for 2018’s B&PG conference in Oxford.
Hannah joined the British Museum as Head of Preventive Conservation in 2016. During her first year she was a Fellow on the Clore Leadership Programme 2016/17 and she has previously held roles at The National Archives, as Conservation Manager - Research & Development. She is a shadow member of the Fabric Advisory Committee for Lincoln Cathedral, a Fellow of the RSA and a mentor for the charity Arts Emergency, a national network of volunteers in the Arts and Humanities coming together to create privilege for people without privilege.
Duygu Camurcuoglu ACR has completed an MA, MSc and a PhD in Conservation/Material Science at UCL. She has been working as an inorganic objects conservator at the British Museum over 10 years. She also worked as the head conservator at the renowned world heritage site of Catalhoyuk for 7 years, supporting a number of conservation students and colleagues through their career development. Duygu has been involved with ICON as a PACR assessor/mentor and actively collaborates with international institutions, such as IIC and ICOM-CC organising large scale conferences.
James Murphy is a Chartered Marketer with 20 years’ experience in the not-for-profit sector. As Head of Digital and then Director of Global Communications at the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), James led major transformation and content programmes that helped to reach new audiences and attract new members, whilst elevating digital competence across the organisation. In 2018, James set up Chalcroft Digital which advises charities and membership organisations on developing organisational and communications strategies, adopting good digital governance, digital community developments and culture change initiatives. He holds a Master’s degree in History of Art from UCL.
Claire is an accredited preventive conservator. After her training at Cardiff University, Claire worked for the National Trust and then English Heritage. Since setting up Spencer & Fry in 2015 Claire has worked with a range of museums, heritage organisations and historic houses in all aspects of preventive conservation, however her particular areas of interest are emergency planning and the management of film crews in historic locations. Claire is an assessor and mentor for the Institute of Conservation accreditation scheme and since 2016 has served on the Fabric Advisory Committee for Leicester Cathedral.
Pierrette Squires is an accredited conservator, influencing and leading the collections team and colleagues at Bolton Museum in sustainable practice, ethics, diversity, and inclusion. Her role combines not only interventive and preventive conservation practice, but also collections and aquarium management. Pierrette has advised widely on the care of human remains, sustainable practice, and LGBT inclusion in Museums. Pierrette regularly mentors Icon and Cardiff university interns, is an Icon accreditation mentor, and runs the North West Conservators Group. Outside of work, Pierrette keeps busy chairing the Bolton LGBT Partnership, volunteering for the Bisexual community and being a Greater Manchester LGBT panel member.
Martin is a Non-Exec Director for the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education and also in the NHS, where he Chairs a Diversity and Inclusion Committee. He is a conference speaker and writer on learning, diversity, and organisational change. He is a Fellow of the RSA and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, taking part in the Policy Forum, which advises Government on employment and training. Martin has previously held international Change Director roles and has been a Change Consultant for the Government. He was previously Diversity and Inclusion Adviser for Macmillan Cancer Support. Martin’s interests include history of art, architecture and collecting ephemera.
