Icon is the leading voice for the conservation of cultural heritage in the UK. We raise awareness of the cultural, social and economic value of caring for our heritage and champion high standards. Icon connects the public to high quality conservation via quality assurance of all Icon accredited conservators.

Icon membership embraces the entire conservation community as well as non-conservators who are keen to learn more or show their support for conservation work. So why not join us and become part of the team?

Member benefits

Icon members receive a variety of benefits including:

  • Icon’s bi-monthly magazine - Icon News - sent straight to your door with the latest on conservation case studies, interviews, reviews and analysis.
  • Three yearly editions of the Journal of the Institute of Conservation - a fully peer-reviewed publication focused on the preservation of cultural heritage in all its forms and featuring innovative research and practice-related articles.
  • Weekly Iconnect Jobs bulletin and access to the Jobs section of the Icon website, featuring conservation vacancies across the UK.
  • Regular email notifications of upcoming events, courses, news and workshops - as well as a monthly Iconnect roundup.
  • Discounted admission to all Icon events (as well as many group and partner events).
  • Access to Icon’s sixteen specialist groups and their vibrant range of events and networking opportunities.
  • Option to join the Pathway membership to receive specialist mentor support on your way to becoming an Icon accredited conservator-restorer (ACR).
  • Ways to make your voice heard: Voting rights in Icon’s Annual General Meetings, a say in electing new trustees and the chance to take part in internal consultations and surveys around the state of the profession.

 

Membership types & fees

All Icon members must agree to Icon’s Professional Standards and Code of Conduct. Membership fees are pro-rated by quarter and subject to change without notice.

Accredited members (£213 GBP) are individuals with an in-depth knowledge of conservation, a high degree of competence, sound judgement and a deep understanding of the principles which underpin their practice, by showing that they are proficient across Icon’s professional standards in conservation. Accredited members are quality assured by Icon - meaning they have been assessed and reviewed by a panel of their Accredited peers, and are subject to regular Continuing Professional Development (CPD) recall. More information on accreditation can be found here. Please note that the Pathway membership is a prerequisite to applying for accreditation.

Pathway members (£150 GBP) are conservators working towards becoming an Accredited Member of Icon. For more information on this membership type, please see here.

Associate members (£120 GBP) are conservators who do not wish to become Accredited, however would like to receive all of the benefits listed above.

Student members (£57 GBP) are those who are enrolled on a course, or completing an entry-level conservation internship. Students receive all benefits listed above.

Supporters (£57 GBP) are not professional conservators, but are those excited about conservation and keen to engage with the sector. Supporters do not receive the Journal or Iconnect Jobs and do not have voting rights at the Annual General Meetings (AGM).

Payment methods

Icon’s membership year runs from 1st April to 31st March.  Full membership dues are applicable to all those joining throughout the year.

Memberships can be paid via direct debit in quarterly instalments on the following dates:

  • 30th April
  • 31st July
  • 31st October
  • ​31st January

To pay in quarterly instalments direct debits must be enacted by 15th April. Memberships enacted after 15th April will be collected in three instalments or fewer according to the quarterly periods remaining in the year.

 

Concessions and tax claims

A concessionary rate is available for Associate Members who are earning less than £20,000 pa. Proof will be required upon application.

Student Members will also need to provide relevant documentation.

If you are a UK taxpayer, and you are paying your membership fees yourself, you can claim the tax back on your Icon membership subscription, as HMRC recognise Icon as a Professional Body. More information on how to claim tax on membership subscriptions can be found at the HMRC website.
