Who we are

Icon’s staff team is based in Southwark near to London Bridge and we are currently supported by two external contractors (our Icon News and Journal editors). You can find out about us and our roles below. Information about our Staff Working Days is also available.


Sara Crofts

Chief Executive

Sara Crofts is responsible for strategic planning and implementation, internal operations and external relations at Icon. She manages a team of 12 and works closely with the Board of Trustees and Board committees. Sara trained as an architect at Edinburgh College of Art, specialising in building conservation and is an SPAB Lethaby Scholar. She is member of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation and a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. She is a Council Member of Europa Nostra and Chair of Europa Nostra UK.


Simon Green

Business Director

Simon Green previously ran a handmade paper mill followed by environmental charity Groundwork Kent & Medway. He was a trustee and company secretary of a heritage steam railway. He was the chair of the Institute of Paper Conservation for five years. Simon has a BSc in Paper Science from the University of Manchester. He joined the staff of Icon in 2011 and works three days a week with responsibility for finance, infrastructure, premises and IT. He is also Company Secretary.

Susan Bradshaw

Head of Professional Development

Susan Bradshaw is part of Icon’s senior management team. She leads on professional development, reporting to Icon’s Professional Standards and Development Steering Committee. Her main areas of responsibility are PACR accreditation, Icon’s Internship Programme, Continuing Professional Development and advocacy of professional standards in conservation. She also contributes to the management of the Journal. Susan works remotely but visits the office on a regular basis.

Patrick Whife

Training & Development Manager

Patrick Whife is the Training & Development Manager for Icon. Patrick previously worked at a further education college, leading on the development of the apprenticeship delivery. He focused on supporting young people to kickstart their careers in the cultural heritage sector and the creative industries. At Icon, Patrick’s work focuses on PACR accreditation, Icon’s Internship Programme and ongoing Professional Development and training.

Michael Nelles

Head of Membership

Michael Nelles previously worked for six years in the museum sector in Hampshire. He worked at the Old Maritime Museum in Southampton as a Curatorial Assistant after he finished his first degree in History in Canada. That led to a frontline management role at Winchester Museums, and while there he joined the Committee of the Hampshire Field Club and Archaeological Society as Hon Membership Secretary. He is currently studying for a PhD in History.

Anni Mantyniemi

Policy and Communications Manager

Anni is the Policy Advisor for Icon. She developed her interest in conservation through her BA in Art History at the University of Sussex and her MA in Conservation from UCL. Before joining Icon, Anni worked in research roles at Historic Royal Palaces and the US Embassy. At Icon, Anni works closely with the Chief Executive to enhance Icon’s advocacy capacity and to influence the policies of governments, NGOs and other voluntary and professional bodies.

Yulia Gladshteyn

Administration and Fundraising Officer

Yulia is the Administration and Fundraising Officer and is responsible for financial and office administration as well as donations and legacies. After graduating in Media and Communications from City University she worked in a number of large companies in the energy and food sectors before deciding to change the career. Her interest in conservation comes from her love of art and history with a focus on Asia. Yulia is currently studying ‘The Art of East Asia’ at the Victoria and Albert Museum and is now undertaking a Masters degree in Art History.

Isabelle Pintado

Membership Officer

Isabelle is Icon's Membership Officer. Isabelle moved from Sydney, Australia to London after working within the membership team at the National Trust of Australia (NSW). Isabelle has nine years’ experience in customer service and marketing, along with a great deal of interest in the conservation of cultural art and history, particularly in fashion and textiles. Geanina Beres

Digital Media Officer

Geanina is the Digital Media Officer. She supports the delivery of Icon’s strategic objectives by maintaining and developing our online presence. Geanina has an MA in History of Art from UCL, and a degree in History of Art with Digital Media and Information Studies from the University of Glasgow, where she studied the use of digital content in the cultural heritage sector. She specializes in Contemporary Art and has an interest in modern materials and new media. Geanina has previously worked for an international art gallery and a number of third sector art organizations. 


Jonathan Kemp

Icon Journal Editor


Dr Jonathan Kemp is the editor of the Journal of the Institute of Conservation. Jonathan is a stone conservator with more than 25 years experience. He has been a lecturer at the City & Guilds of London Art School, and a senior conservator at the Victoria and Albert Museum. He is also a practicing new media artist. Lynette Gill

Icon News Editor


Lynette Gill is Editor of Icon News, which is published every two months and sent to all Icon members along with other friends and sponsors of conservation. Icon News covers conservation stories, news of people and events in the profession and developments in Icon itself. Lynette is a freelance member of the Icon team. She has a degree in conservation.
