A Spanish Retablo in Utrecht: research into the 15th century altarpiece of De Haar Castle.

A discussion on the rare occurrence of 15th century Spanish paintings in the Netherlands

De Haar Castle (near Utrecht) is the largest castle in The Netherlands. It is a highlight of neo-gothic architecture and decoration. Its eclectic collection houses an ensemble of Spanish paintings which has largely been overlooked, both by art historians and the general public, even though these are the only examples of Spanish 15th century painting in the Netherlands. A research project was set up to change this. Both art-historical and material-technical research was carried out aiming to answer questions regarding the paintings’ provenance, attribution and current condition.
