Ethnography Group: Chilkat Weaving and Material Sovereignty of Alaska's Northwest Coast

Join us for a talk by Lily Hope, renowned Chilkat weaver, artist, and teacher

At any point in the past few hundred years fewer than a dozen ceremonial Chilkat blanket makers practiced every day. Traditional material use has changed in the last 50 years due to global accessibility. What does it mean for a new cohort of weavers to reclaim the use of mountain goat and yellow cedar bark in ceremonial regalia? Renowned weaver, Lily Hope, will present the challenges in the access and supply of traditional materials.

This talk is jointly organised by the Pitt Rivers Museum, University of Oxford and ICON Ethnography Group, with support from Goldbelt Heritage and Native Arts and Culture Foundation (NACF)
