Furniture and Woodwork Group: Glue Day with Yannick Chastang ACR

A one-day practical demonstration with Yannick Chastang ACR at his workshop in Faversham, Kent

Join the Furniture and Woodwork Group for an exciting visit to Yannick Chastang's workshop in Faversham.

In the mid 1990s, the ADEN group (a group of marquetry conservation professionals in Paris) organised a major research into animal glues, in collaboration with a wood technology school – ENSTIB (Ecole Nationale Superieure des techniques aux Industries du Bois). Commercially available glues were scientifically tested and new glues were developed as a result.

The conservation landscape has changed dramatically since the mid 1990s. Many animal glues are not available any more due to a drop in industrial demands and CITES protection of the species of fish used in the fish glue. However, the need for reversibility, compatibility with the original object and stability have not changed. In 2001, APROA-BRK (The Professional Conservation Association of Belgium) organised a two-day seminar on gluing materials and techniques used across all fields of conservation. This seminar inspired new research within the furniture conservation field, using materials and techniques normally used in other disciplines.

The materials used in glues are constantly changing with new recipes and techniques regularly being developed. This one-day practical demonstration and discussion, taking place at Yannick Chastang’s workshop in Kent, will cover all the glues and gluing techniques developed in the past 30 years by Yannick Chastang. Over the course of the day you will review and compare clamping techniques, discuss traditional hide glue versus fish glue and review modified protein glues alongside the ready-made adhesives available on the market today.

We hope to organise a shuttle service closer to the date when the number of people travelling by car or by train is confirmed. If you require a lift from Faversham railway station please let Michel Aslangul know.
