Gilding & Decorative Surfaces Group AGM
To: Tuesday 27.11.18
24 Old Gloucester St
The GDSG Committee invites our members to the Annual General Meeting.
Followed by a session, ‘Toning: Techniques & Materials’, courtesy of Zoe Allen and Judy Wetherall.
2018 has proved to be a year of great change for the Committee; hence we seek to recruit a Group Chair and a Group Secretary. For their dedication to GDSG over the years, we thank Suzanne Sacorafou and Claire Irvine and wish them well in their future endeavours. This will be a great occasion for members to express their interest in either of the above roles. Being actively involved with the Committee is also a great opportunity to meet regularly with colleagues and to be the first to learn of news and developments in the field.
The GDSG Group Membership continues to grow and this year we have organised several sell-out events. Being part of the Committee is an excellent opportunity to shape the forthcoming events calendar, to contribute to our web content and to influence our engagement with our membership.
On the night, we will be providing a ‘Suggestions Box’, and we encourage our members to provide feedback, comments and any suggestions which you would like to see enacted in the coming year.
Following the AGM there will be a session on, ‘Toning Techniques and Materials’:
Judy Wetherall ACR will first present a recent project to restore a set of 1688 James II furniture with 1950’s gilding from the collection at Knole House. The treatment posed challenges in approach and resulting methods and materials which relied on successful gilding, distressing and toning.
Judy has worked for the National Trust, English Heritage; Royal Collections; Guildhall Art Gallery as well as numerous private clients and was the 2015 winner of the Lord Balfour of Burleigh Award for Excellence in Craftsmanship.
Zoe Allen will then discuss her favoured techniques, methods and materials for toning after which we invite all attendees to pose questions to hopefully encourage an interesting discussion on this ever evolving topic.
Zoe is the Furniture Conservation Studio Head at the V&A.
Following the talk we invite you to enjoy a festive nibble and glass of wine. We look forward to seeing you all on the 27th November.
