Gilding & Decorative Surfaces Group: Christmas Party and AGM
The October Gallery, 24 Old Gloucester Street
Bloomsbury, London, WC1N 3AL
The evening will commence with V&A conservators: Zoe Allen and Yukiko Barrow presenting their recent work on the carved and gilded angel known as ‘The Spirit of Gaiety’.
The Spirit of Gaiety was made in 1904 by Hibbert C. Binney for the dome of the second Gaiety Theatre which stood at the junction of Aldwich and the Strand.
After the theatre was destroyed in 1957 the angel was salvaged and she is now part of the V&A’s theatre and performance collection. The figure is an extremely rare example of a wooden architectural sculpture preserved within a museum collection.
Due to the size and weight of these figures, and to the deterioration they tend to suffer through exposure to the elements and to pollution, they are seldom preserved intact when the buildings they surmount are demolished. Zoe and Yukiko will talk about the conservation work carried out to the angel to prepare it for display.
The AGM will follow the lecture. The Group’s news and events of 2017 will be summarized. This is your opportunity to have a say on the Group’s activity and future events. You are welcome to bring along guests interested in the Group and its activities.
After the lecture and AGM we have our Christmas party, with food and drink.
