Event description:

After the disastrous fire in 2015 destroyed much of the house and collection, a conservation plan has been completed - but these have been challenging times. The team has had to think carefully about how to contextualise surviving material culture, balancing conservation and restoration and communicating a vision of the new Clandon Park.

At the time of the fire, Sophie Chessum held a dual role - curator for Ham House and specialist team leader for Trust properties in Kent and East Sussex. On the night of the fire, Sophie assisted and was appointed to the role of salvage lead - and soon thereafter stepping up to lead curatorial and conservation response, devising the vision for the future of Clandon Park.

Sophie will talk about the salvage operation and how she went about it, along with the philosophical position she took at the outset and the vision that developed thereafter.
