Emma Callaghan
Apprentice Conservator, National Museum of the Royal Navy
I am an Apprentice Conservator at the National Museum of the Royal Navy, enrolled in the Cultural Heritage Conservator Apprenticeship, studying at the University of Lincoln. My work is largely focused on supporting the conservation of HMS Trincomalee at the museum’s site in Hartlepool, and the preventive conservation of the stores and galleries on site.
I am particularly interested in conservation and the management thereof within museums and believe that the apprenticeship course represents ‘the best of both worlds’; learning on the job from conservation professionals whilst exploring the theoretical and academic element of the profession at university.

Lizzie Neville
Head of Conservation, West Dean
Lizzie Neville
Head of Conservation, West Dean
My career in conservation and education grew out of an early interest in archaeology and I was working on “digs” from the age of 15. In my early twenties, inspired by a visit to the Library at Trinity College, Dublin, I studied bookbinding and then library and archives conservation at Camberwell School of Art and Crafts. This was followed by a stint in the USA, firstly in a commercial bindery in Chicago and then in the newly set up conservation studio at North-Western University, Illinois. On returning to the UK, I worked mainly as a freelance book conservator, interspersed with teaching at Camberwell and then West Dean. Alongside this I was active in the formation of Icon, the introduction of professional accreditation for conservators (PACR) and developing the Icon Code of Conduct. Following a move to Cornwall, I founded PZ Conservation CIC and, with the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund, ran library and archive traineeships for fledgling conservators, to develop their skills whilst assisting local heritage organisations. Since 2019, I have held the role of Head of Conservation at West Dean, with oversight over the post-graduate programs, the Diploma in Building Conservation and professional development short courses for conservators and heritage professionals.
