Icon Gilding & Decorative Surfaces Group Annual General Meeting and Christmas Party
Followed by a talk by Gerry Alabone on Revealing Sir Thomas Sackville’s rich Jacobean hall of fame at Knole and a Christmas Quiz.
Knole’s medieval interiors were transformed into a dazzling Renaissance palace by Thomas Sackville in the four years up to his death in 1608. Sackville’s largest gallery was temporarily uncovered in stages between 2015 and 2019 as part of the house’s major Inspired by Knole conservation project. The richly carved, polychromed and gilded oak gallery was found to include a frieze for over forty panel portraits alternating with term figures. Material evidence from the thirty-eight extant portraits, rehung elsewhere at Knole since the early eighteenth century, confirms they and their engaged frames were made for the gallery, along with forty surviving term figures. All were originally displayed above panelling with trophy pilasters which remain in situ. As part of the project, tracings were made of nail holes around the edges of the frames, and matched to holes in the frieze, establishing the specific location where each portrait was fixed in 1608.
After the talk, there will be a chance get competitive in a Christmas Quiz. Expect surprises and some interesting prizes!
Drinks and food will be provided.
