Icon Specialist Advisor Training

An online session for Accredited Members interested in becoming Specialist Advisors, covering the role, responsibilities, and support available to help assess candidates' specialist knowledge in the Accreditation process

Icon’s Specialist Advisors play a vital role in the Icon Accreditation assessment process, ensuring that candidates are evaluated by professionals with expertise in the same material specialism or area of conservation practice. Their input helps maintain the high standards expected within the conservation profession.

We’re seeking specialists from all areas of practice, with a particular interest in those experienced in textiles, paintings, modern and contemporary art, architectural conservation, and film.

Specialist Advisors collaborate closely with our pool of qualified Assessors to review candidates’ documentary evidence and participate in the Professional Discussion during the assessment process. Their role is to ensure candidates demonstrate proficiency across the Icon Professional Standards.

If you’re familiar with the previous Accreditation process, you may notice some changes. As a Specialist Advisor, your primary focus is to assess a candidate’s material knowledge and specialist practice. While you’ll contribute to the assessment report, it’s the qualified Assessors who make final decisions, complete the paperwork, and manage the practical arrangements.

Specialist Advisors receive an honorarium of £150 per assessment, along with reimbursement for any travel and subsistence expenses — although many assessments are conducted online.

To become a Specialist Advisor, you must:
  • Be an Accredited Member of Icon
  • Be available to undertake at least one assessment per year
  • Participate in the annual standardisation meeting and training
Led by our Skills and Accreditation Manager, Heather Doyle, this session will cover:
  • The roles and responsibilities of a Specialist Advisor
  • An up-to-date overview of the Icon Accreditation application process
  • An introduction to our ePortfolio system, OneFile
  • Where to find additional support and guidance

Please note that you’ll need to attend the training session live.

If you’re interested but unable to join on this date, please email [email protected] and we’ll be in touch when the next round of training is scheduled.
