Review the principles of Polarizing Light Microscopy (PLM)

This online seminar will review the principles of Polarizing Light Microscopy (PLM) and its use as a fundamental technique for the identification of pigments complementing and sometimes even providing information beyond what can be detected with some instrumental methods. The results of PLM can help date an artifact and elucidate its original appearance, use, and current condition The seminar will be illustrated with practical case studies taken from decorative arts, artifacts, and architecture in the Colonial Williamsburg collection.
There will be a 55 minute presentation followed by 15 minutes of discussion.
Kirsten Travers Moffitt is the Conservator and Materials Analyst for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, USA, where she works with conservators, curators, and historic interpreters to conduct scientific research for all collection materials. She has a special interest in historic paint and pigments, particularly those used in architectural settings.
