Workshop 1. INTRO TO PATTERN CUTTING – 3.5 hours

Dates: Wednesday 4th November (6pm-9.30pm GMT)

This class will cover all about blocks and principles of pattern cutting. It will include what is a block, how to create and obtain one, taking measurements, blocks vs fashion history, dart manipulation, shaping with panels, creating volume with ‘slash and spread’. The class will be a mixture of slides and practical demonstrations. We will send out mini-blocks to be printed at home on A4 paper prior to the class, so students can follow along with the manipulations if they wish. There will also be a follow up handout to accompany the class.

Workshop 2. DRAPING - 3.5 hours

Dates: Group 1: Wednesday 2nd December (6pm - 9.30pm GMT)

This class will cover the difference between flat pattern cutting and draping and how the two have evolved historically. There will be practical demonstration of how to create a pattern through draping on the stand including: how to prepare a dress-stand for draping, the importance of grain lines, how to create different styles on the stand, how to create a usable pattern from your draping. The class will be a mixture of slides and practical demonstrations. Students can equip themselves with a piece of fabric (tea towel, table cloth, scarf) in order to follow along and do some trial draping. There will also be a follow up handout to accompany the class.

Workshop 3. TAKING PATTERNS/MAKING TOILES - 3.5 hours

Dates: Group 1: Wednesday 16th December (6pm-9.30pm GMT)

This class will cover: how to read a garment backwards, when to do a toile, understanding how to turn a 3D garment into a 2D pattern, how to approach taking a pattern from a garment. We will cover a variety of methods including: pinning out on a foam board, measuring, tracing off. Show and tell - we will ask participants to choose a garment from their own wardrobe or a photograph of a historical garment that interests them and hold a group discussion about the best way to approach taking a pattern.
