Practical Medieval Foliage Carving Course for Architects and Surveyors
Elm Grove, East Street, Drayton, Langport, Somerset TA10 0JZ
This is a new course being offered to architects and surveyors who have a interest in stone, medieval art and stone carving
The course will take place in Nick Durnan's new timber frame studio in the village of Drayton on the Somerset Levels. The development and evolution of foliage through the Anglo Saxon, romanesque and Early English periods will be explained and discussed. The first day will be spent learning to carve basic geometry patterns and simple leaf forms to develop tool skills. The second day will provide time to carve a section of Early English ‘stiff leaf’ foliage. The course suits both compete beginners and those with some stone carving experience.
The course is tutored by experienced carver and conservator, Nick Durnan. He has been teaching for over 35 years and has run several stone carving weekend and one day courses. The course will cover: tool and stone selection, carving and stone working techniques, and health and safety in the carver’s workshop. This course, with a high level of individual tuition, is structured to the needs and abilities of the participants. Over the two days, each participant will carve a simple early medieval geometric design and a section of Early English ‘stiff leaf’ which they will be able to take away with them at the end of the course. See overleaf for examples of what can be achieved.
All stone, materials and equipment (limestone, chisels, hammers) are supplied. You may wish to bring a pen and paper to take notes and a camera. There is a small library of Anglo Saxon, romanesque and medieval sculpture books and resources for your reference.
