How others think about art can be crucial to the perception of our work. This talk seeks to demystify the art market for conservators.

Event description:

It is always important to have an understanding of the structure of the environment in which one works. Few, if any, conservators are unaffected by the international art market, a market that is complex and now performs faster than ever before. This presentation examines the different building blocks of that market. It will look at their roles, how they interact and relate to each other; the roles of public and commercial galleries, auction house, curator and critic. There will be an analysis of the legal and fiscal structures such as import vat and droit de suite and in addition this presentation will highlight certain flaws within the system and encourage a discussion on the role conservation plays within the international art market.
