Join us for a two day programme of fascinating talks and exploration of stained glass in Manchester
Icon Stained Glass Group is delighted to announce our AGM and Autumn conference, scheduled for the 21st and 22nd of October 2023 at Manchester Art Gallery. We have a rich and plentiful list of guest speakers and welcome all to attend our event to explore and discuss various approaches and techniques in conservation.
Our chosen venue, Manchester Art Gallery, boasts an impressive collection of crafts, designs, and fine artworks. Notably, it houses William Holman Hunt's iconic masterpiece, 'The Light of the World,' which has been extensively replicated in stained glass.
Manchester's historical significance as an innovative and industrial city is evident in its stained glass, as well as its rich selection of museum and gallery highlights.

Director, Mongoose Stained Glass Ltd.
Petri Anderson AMGP is the director, chief designer and painter at Mongoose Stained Glass Ltd. He started studying restoration glass painting in 1989 under the tutelage of Peter Archer AMGP and Alfred Fisher FMGP. Upon Mr Archer's retirement, Petri became head designer and painter for Chapel Studio before establishing Mongoose Stained Glass in 2005. He is an Associate of the British Society of Master Glass Painters (BSMGP).
Petri's work can be seen nationally in parish churches, cathedrals, private homes, schools, colleges, and city livery companies. In recent years his portfolio has taken on a new dimension with work in the USA, Japan, Central Asia, Finland, and the Carribean. In 2022 he was invited to run a procreate stained glass design workshop at the American Glass Guild Conference in Corning.
Director, Iona Art Glass
Chris Chesney has been an accredited conservator since the scheme began and is also the Director of Iona Art Glass which he established with his wife Sarah in 1986. Chris has lectured successfully at numerous ICON and CVMA symposiums alongside publishing relevant peer-reviewed papers. Having also been a former chair and treasurer of the SGG Chris will inevitably be an immeasurable fount of knowledge and encouragement for the current group.
Conservator, The Cathedral Studios, Canterbury
Isabelle Davies studied Classical Archaeology and Ancient History at Oxford University and then an MA in Stained Glass Conservation and Heritage Management at the University of York. She received the Worshipful Company of Glaziers' Ashton Hill Award 2022 and completed her placement at Reyntiens Glass Studio, London. She now works as a conservator at The Cathedral Studios, Canterbury.
Founder, designer and director, De Pirey Design Studio, France
Bruno De Pirey attended l’Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Métiers d’Art, and specialized in the design and creation of stained glass.
He has been running his own studio since 1978, designing and making stained glass windows for churches, temples, private residences, and public buildings. His artwork can be found in many different countries including France, the USA, Pakistan, and the United Arab Emirates. In conjunction with new designs Bruno has carried out a number of prestigious restoration and conservation projects over the years in France and overseas, notably in the cathedrals of Bourges, Chartres, Tours and currently Le Mans and churches such as St Gervais Saint Protais in Paris and St James Chapel, Quigley Seminary in Chicago.
Director , Limelight Studios Ltd
Derek Hunt a Fellow of the British Society of Master Glass Painters, Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and an Accredited Stained Glass Conservator with over 38 years’ experience running his own studio. He designs and makes new glass artworks for public spaces, private homes and churches, and makes traditional stained glass and enjoys working with new techniques to push the creative boundaries of the medium. He carries out a wide variety of conservation projects and teaches traditional glass painting at his studio in Leicestershire and at the Ely Stained Glass Museum, situated in Ely Cathedral. He hosts a Youtube channel dedicated to all things stained glass, with tutorials, inspirational videos and interviews with some of the most exciting international glass artists working today.
Conservator, Iona Art Glass
Vivienne Kelly is working toward her Master’s degree in Stained Glass Conservation and Heritage Management at the University of York and is particularly interested in researching 19th and 20th Century Scottish glass. She is a QEST Trust Pilgrim scholar and holds a first-class Hons in Fine Art from Glasgow School of Art. She currently works as a conservator at Iona Art Glass.
Independent accredited stained glass conservator and designer
Elise Learner is a graduate of Leeds university in Fine Art/Art history and French, Elise Learner went on to study architectural stained glass in Swansea. Having always wanted to work in conservation she joined Chapel studio in 1987 as a trainee conservator. This included an intensive training period at the LRMH (France) in 1989, where she was able to study the science of conservation. She obtained her accredited status with the Institute of Conservation in 2005.
Elise moved to France in 1991 where she still lives and works in collaboration with a number of studios on important conservation projects such as the Cathedrals of Metz, Chartres, and le Mans Cathedral. She has also continued to participate in projects in the UK such as Middle Temple and Strawberry Hill House. In addition to her conservation projects, she has also been designing and making stained glass windows for a number of churches and private homes.
Director, Rainbow Glass Studio Ltd
Moira Malcolm was elected chair of the ICON Stained Glass Group (SGG) at their annual AGM on the third of November at The Artworkers Guild in London 2022. She began her studies in Edinburgh College of Art before training in stained glass conservation in Scotland. In 2001 she decided to start her own business, Rainbow Glass Studio Ltd alongside her husband Stephen. Each year the company has grown and have completed many large-scale conservation projects in historic listed buildings.
Moira has built up her knowledge and deontology to preserve Scottish works of art for future generations to come. She is now involved in both stained glass conservation and contemporary design.

Stephen Malcolm has the unique experience of beginning his apprenticeship in traditional decorative embossed glass prior to continuing onto stained glass conservation. His tradesmen George Young, a glass painter and embosser for City Glass and Abbey Studios came out of retirement to work closely with Stephen and pass on his skills. Setting up Rainbow Glass Studio Ltd alongside Moira in 2001, he continues to use these skills to complete various projects such as the domed roof light in the opulent Gleneagles Townhouse, Edinburgh, and the scheme of embossed glass in Russell Institute, Paisley. Knowledge of these embossing skills has been invaluable to the development of Rainbow Glass Studio Ltd.
Director of Stained Glass Conservation , Canterbury Cathedral
Leonie Seliger is the Director of The Canterbury Studio working in the conservation and restoration of stained glass, and responsible for the conservation of the stained glass windows of Canterbury Cathedral. Leonie also advises the Dioceses of Canterbury and Rochester on faculty applications involving windows in the churches of the dioceses. Leonie studied glass painting and design at Hadamar College in Germany and holds an MA in Buildings Conservation from the University of York. She is Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Glaziers and an ICON accredited conservator/restorer.Freelance Conservator
Kasi graduated from the University of York with an MA in stained glass conservation and heritage management. Her dissertation examined the feasibility of digitally documenting and conserving stained glass using photogrammetry. This topic is located at the intersection of her interests in digital arts, physical media, art history and conservation, arising from her undergraduate degree, a BFA in graphic design from California State University, Fresno. She currently works freelance to help YGT get the York Minster Navigator website updated.
