New for 2019! Icon Scotland chair and committee
At ICON Scotland Group’s last AGM, Christa Gerdwilker ACR was confirmed as the new Chair of the Group. She takes over from Rob Thomson ACR who spent an impressive seven years leading the Committee in the post.
Christa writes, by way of welcome:
"Since joining the ICON Scotland Group’s committee last year, I have been awed by the enthusiasm of its members and the range of activities undertaken by the committee. Rob’s chairmanship is a hard act to follow, but after receiving a warm and supportive welcome, I am very much looking forward to working with my fellow committee members. A successful committee is bit like a swan – calm and apparently effortless motion above the water, masking steadfast effort underneath! In this case, the most visible sign of the work done by the committee is the great programme of events that have been put on every year, culminating in our prestigious annual Plenderleith lecture. In the background, however, Scotland Group also collaborates with national heritage bodies on policy and heritage strategy while supporting ICON’s HQ in its activities. I very much hope to continue in this vein to provide Scotland Group members with a representative body that delivers results for them in terms of representation, networking and learning."
"I started my professional career in object conservation but, following further training, specialised in stone and architectural conservation. After working as a freelance stone conservator for a couple of years I joined the conservation department of (now) Historic Environment Scotland (HES) and became accredited in 2002. Since 2017 I have been involved in lecturing on the Building Conservation post-graduate diploma course run by HES and I frequently host students and apprentices on placements in our workshop. With my background in both collections and architectural conservation I hope to foster closer collaboration between architectural heritage bodies and ICON. As a life-long learner and conservation trainer myself, I am aware of the need for accessible and high-quality conservation training and development opportunities. As such I particularly welcome our student members to the committee".
"If you have any issues, feedback, news, particular interests, suggestions, questions or want to become involved in the committee I invite you to get in touch with the committee by emailing Scotland@icon.org.uk or via our social media channels (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Linkedin). We need your input and support to make sure we can represent you and offer the training and networking you need. For the time being, the Events team already has a host of exciting events lined up over the next 12 months, and I look forward to meeting some of one of these."
