Senior Manager 2D Conservation

Royal Museums Greenwich is seeking a Senior Manager 2D Conservation

Royal Museums Greenwich consists of the National Maritime Museum, Royal Observatory Greenwich, Peter Harrison Planetarium, the Queen’s House art gallery, the Cutty Sark, and the Prince Philip Maritime Collections Centre  (PPMCC). Our mission is to enrich people’s understanding of the sea, the exploration of space, art and architecture, and monumental British history. And, right now, we’re looking for a digitally literate individual with significant conversation experience to join our Collections Services team.

We recently began an exciting new phase of collections and conservation access at our state-of-the art-facilities at PPMCC. A dynamic programme is opening up unique access to collections and expertise and creating a new level of ‘behind the scenes’ experience for visitors to the site.  Its aim is to benefit the local community and interested parties and support curriculum related learning and opportunities for professional skills development. But we need your help.

Responsible for developing an innovative, progressive and accessible approach to 2D conservation across the organisation, we’ll look to you to work collaboratively to develop strategies for the care and treatment of paper, textiles, paintings and frames. We’ll also rely on you to research and build partnerships beyond the Museum that will ensure we lead on emerging best practice across each discipline.

Managing, supporting and providing effective senior leadership for three studio based teams will be important too, as will advising on, and undertaking, practical conservation treatment in your specialist area. And, when it comes to supporting the development of an engaging programme of learning and public access opportunities across all five sites, again, we’ll count on you.

An accomplished conservation manager, you have a passion for providing and promoting access to collections and conservation skills. You also have significant experience in one of the disciplines covered by the post, plus a proven ability to collaborate, both internally and with external stakeholders. Used to providing access to conservation within and beyond the wider heritage sector, you understand the value of emerging digital trends in conservation practice too. What’s more, you’re adept at managing staff and budgets, work well on your own initiative and have excellent problem solving and analytical skills.
