The Heritage Alliance Announces New Chair

The Heritage Alliance, a coalition of over 100 independent heritage organisations in England, has announced Peter Ainsworth as its new Chair.  Ainsworth is expected to assume the role at the Alliance’s AGM in December 2018 from Loyd Grossman CBE, who will be standing down after nine years in post.

Ainsworth is a former Conservative politician with over 30 years of commitment to public life. He was MP for East Surrey from 1992 to 2010 and served as Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport (1998-2001) and Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (2001-2002, 2005-2009). Ainsworth is currently Chair of the Big Lottery Fund and Chairman of the Churches Conservation Trust.

In his statement following the announcement, Ainsworth highlighted the importance of conserving cultural heritage:

“At a time of economic, social and political challenge the values and lessons gifted to us by the past become even more potent. The vast diversity of our historic buildings and landscapes provides thousands of jobs and is the cornerstone of our vital tourism industry. Just as important is the sense of joy, and sometimes awe, to be gained from visiting a great house, a medieval church, or a humble cottage steeped in history. This is for everyone today; it is the duty of our generation to pass it on to the future.”

Grossman expressed confidence in his successor, saying he could think of “no one better able to fill the role.” “He brings the right combination of political and Board-level experience, as well as sheer unadulterated enthusiasm for this country’s unique and glorious heritage in all its many shapes and sizes,” Grossman asserted.

The Heritage Alliance Chief Executive Lizzie Glithero-West mirrored Grossman’s confidence, describing how “members will be greatly reassured to know that we have someone of Peter’s stature and ability to speak up for them in all the key political and policy debates.” Glithero-West said Ainsworth’s enthusiasm for the Alliance was “already so evident.”
