Embroidered Jacket

The aim of the treatment was to stabilise the jacket so that it may be used as a part of the teaching collection for Dress and Textile history students.

Wet Cleaning

The item was very soiled with large sticky stains and inactive fungal residues. To ensure the safe handling the item was wet cleaned and quickly dried to prevent the running of the dyes. / University of Glasgow

Stitching

The nape of the jacket had suffered considerable loss both in the lining and outer fabric from rust stains which had catalysed the degradation of the fibres. Small patches of cotton voile were dyed and inserted between the areas of loss using the 'rodeo' method and stitched into place. Stabilisation was necessary to ensure the safe handling of the item as it was to be used as a study item with students and may be frequently displayed on a mannequin. / University of Glasgow

What was the goal the project set out to achieve?

What did I do?

-Surface cleaning with lower power vacuum suction, brushes, and sponges.
- Wet cleaning.
-Stabilisation of areas of loss with inserted cotton voile patches and secured in place with stitching.
-Additional humidification to remove creases and form into shape.
- Padding of a custom mount to correctly display silhouette of jacket.
