Expert, accredited conservation, based in London
Bainbridge Conservation offers reliable, ethically-based conservation treatments, analysis, and advice. Conservation treatments vary widely depending on context, but in general we aim to preserve objects for as long as possible with as little intervention as possible, and with as much honesty and removability as possible. In some cases intervention is necessary, to reveal obscured information or surfaces as in a repainted piece of furniture, to maintain functionality as in the case of a broken chair or binding, or to prevent active decay such as mould damage or insect infestation or a print framed with acidic materials.
We make our repairs aesthetically pleasing and sympathetic, sometimes invisible to the untrained eye, but always distinguishable to an expert so that it is clear what is original, what is a later intervention, and what is the modern conservation.
Our treatments are underpinned by an understanding of conservation science and the ability to choose materials which will be as safe as possible to your objects. We also perform surveys on collections, do conservation cleaning, carry out analysis, and give advice about preventative approaches—it's always best to spend your resources up front to keep your objects in good condition in the first place.
Conservation of Furniture
The furniture studio conserves all aspects of furniture, from 13th-century coffers to 20th-century modern pieces. Our work is underpinned by traditional cabinet-making, knowledge of materials and historic construction, and rigorous modern conservation techniques.
Conservation of Objects & Decorative Arts
Furniture often incorporates diverse materials beyond wood, such as paint, shellac, and decorative elements like ivory, bone, brass, and mother-of-pearl. We therefore also conserve objects made from these materials.
Conservation of Interior Woodwork
We specialise in on-site conservation of interior woodwork for churches, historic buildings, and scheduled monuments. We work closely with architects and heritage organisations, delivering high-quality work on time and within budget. We also create new woodwork in period styles for historic house restorations.
Conservation of Asian Lacquer
We specialise in Asian lacquer and European japanning, treating objects from China, Japan, Korea, and Myanmar. Asian lacquer is made from tree sap, hardened and polished to a high shine. Decoration often includes rich materials like gold and silver, mother-of-pearl, and ivory. European japanning imitates Asian lacquer using paint and gilding.
Conservation of Frames
Frame conservation includes replacing lost carving, structural repairs, cleaning gilded surfaces, and adapting frames to accommodate conservation interventions. We also treat paper-based objects within frames and provide conservation-quality mounting.
Conservation of Gilded Objects
We frequently work on gilt furniture, mirrors, carving, and sculptures. Our focus is on preserving and sometimes revealing historic gilding, often hidden under layers of gold overpaint. We use both modern and traditional techniques for new gilding.
Conservation of Books
Book conservation is challenging due to their dual role: as functional objects and cultural artefacts. Many have undergone multiple rebindings, obscuring their original form. Structural failures can arise from centuries of use or poor initial construction.
Conservation of Paper
We treat older printed paper, such as engravings and lithographs. For modern works, we offer selected treatments and collaborate with paper conservation specialists when needed. We also provide mounting and framing services.
Bookbinding & Finishing
We create bespoke bindings for both printed and blank books. We use leather, parchment, cloth, and paper, and offer gold tooling and decoration.
Enclosures & Cradles
We make custom enclosures and cradles for books and related materials. Enclosures provide protection, while cradles support safe exhibition. We use archival materials and prioritize sustainability.
Mounting & Framing
We offer mounting and framing services. Frames not only enhance presentation but also protect objects from damage. We use high-quality museum board and hinging techniques, conserve old frames, and create new ones.
Condition Reports, Surveys & Advice
We provide comprehensive condition reports for various purposes: pre-purchase evaluations, loan agreements, funding applications, insurance claims, and client records. We conduct collection surveys to assess condition, inform budgets, and guide conservation planning. Our independent perspective is valuable for institutions and serious collectors. We also offer expert advice on collections care, including cleaning, storage, and preventative measures.
