Icon’s Modern Materials and Contemporary Art Groups, in collaboration with UCL East, are hosting a conference on 31 March 2025, focused on practical challenges and solutions in the conservation of contemporary materials. Following from the call for presentations, we are now inviting submissions for 5 minute lightning talks that will outline ongoing projects, current questions or unresolved discussions. We are looking for talks that can generate discussion and the sharing of knowledge, experience or frustrations.

Icon’s Modern Materials and Contemporary Art Groups with UCL’s MSc in Conservation of Contemporary Art and Media are pleased to be hosting a one-day in-person conference that aims to bring together conservation specialisms to discuss the practical challenges brought by contemporary materials.

We are looking for 5 minute presentations on ongoing projects through which you want to seek discussion, support and knowledge-sharing. Contributions can speak to any kind of conservation activity, and contemporary materials can be interpreted broadly, with examples being synthetic textiles and dyes, novel coatings, plastics, kinetic objects, and digital media.

Presentations will be 5 minutes and will need to be presented in person at UCL East, London. Presentations will be followed by group discussions. Lightning talks and subsequent discussions will not be recorded. We hope the in person nature of the conference will encourage open and non judgemental discussions of potentially sensitive topics.
