Heritage Open Days is England's largest festival of history and culture, involving thousands of local volunteers and organisations. This year’s theme 'Routes, Networks and Connections' celebrates how people and ideas have moved around and come together throughout history. Thousands of volunteers across the country are opening doors to hidden places and offering unique experiences all for FREE.

This year, Icon members are showcasing their incredible work in preserving our cultural heritage by hosting Conservation Tours where you can:
 
  • Meet expert conservators and learn about their fascinating projects.
  • Tour conservation labs and see behind-the-scenes work.
  • Participate in interactive workshops and discover the art of conservation.

Behind the scenes of The Conservation Studio at People's History Museum

Icon member Jenny Van Enckevort ACR and the conservation team at People’s History museum will be hosting two public tours of the Conservation Studio on the 14  September 2024. This will be an opportunity to learn about the world’s largest collection of trade union and political banners, how techniques of banner production have changed over time, and how we care for the museum’s collection today.

Visitors can get up close to objects currently being conserved, with demonstrations of techniques used, and learn about the process of preparing items for public display.

Thay can also explore the main galleries, featuring the 2024 Banner Exhibition, the world’s oldest trade union banner and a rare general election banner from 1906 which is part of the General Election Trail.
