Icon launches new basic conservation skills course

Essentials of Collections Care for Non-Conservators!

Icon has launched an exciting new series of workshops designed to equip non-conservators with the basic conservation skills needed to keep cultural heritage supported.

Designed for those with no conservation experience, Essentials of Collections Care for Non-Conservators will help participants fully understand the work of a professional conservator, and know when and how to bring a professional on board.

From learning how to do a basic condition assessment to understanding the qualities of different materials, there are a huge range of skills that a non-conservator can employ in their day-to-day work, regardless of the sector.

We recognise that not all conservation is done by conservators. In fact, it’s a key skill to know at what point to get a professional involved, and how to monitor conditions in the meantime.

We know that many small museums, galleries, and archives lack full-time conservation staff, and rely on the work of curators, front of house staff, and even volunteers to undertake the essential day-to-day care and maintenance of their collections. This course ensures that anyone working in heritage will be well-equipped with the fundamentals of successful collections care.

The four sessions will be run by Jane Thompson-Webb ACR, Head of Collection Services at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.

The first three sessions will be held online, with the last held at the Birmingham Museum Collection Centre, allowing for a hands-on engagement with parts of the collection.

Attendees who would benefit from this course are likely to include front-of-house workers, curators, council workers, community volunteers, historic house staff, and many more.
