Icon24 Reflections
From delegates and speakers to exhibitors and sponsors, we want to thank everyone that made Icon24 a huge success. Over two unforgettable days, we explored how conservation positively contributes to our communities, sparking engaging dialogues, and forming meaningful collaborations. Our CEO Emma sums it up wonderfully: “Icon24 was an incredible opportunity to see and hear from so many of Icon’s members, and supporters from the wider heritage sector. I was really impressed by the diversity of voices and experiences from those who spoke and the ambition for genuine and positive change for the sector and those it engages and inspires to be moved by heritage!”.
Icon24 highlighted that conservation is about more than just preserving the past; it's about meaningfully engaging with communities, sharing stories and encouraging progress. Conservators are at the forefront of driving the shift from object-focused to audience-driven collections care. They are also experts in managing and embracing change, helping to discover new ways to contribute to our collective well-being. Through the brilliant case studies presented at Icon24 we saw how conservation helps communities engage with traumatic histories, and how it can be a powerful tool for healing. Heather, our Accreditation Manager, was especially moved by this: “The key takeaway for me was that conservation can play a unique role in helping society heal from past trauma. This was particularly apparent in the very powerful and emotive presentations from Kate Fugett about the 9/11 Memorial & Museum and Anisha Parmar and Melangell Penryhs about the collection at Kedleston Hall”.
The conference was an amazing opportunity for networking within the conservation community and wider heritage sector. Patrick, our Policy and Programmes Director reflected: “It was fantastic to see so many professionals come together at Icon24. There was a real buzz throughout the venue with delegates reconnecting with colleagues, making new contacts and taking part in a jam-packed inspiring programme of talks and presentations; showing the power of conservation to help us connect with our past and shape our future. I can’t wait to see everyone again when we come together in Edinburgh for Icon26!”
Environmental sustainability was a hot topic and here at Icon, we took away that even small actions—like using fewer gloves—can make a big difference. Amy, our Marketing and Membership Manager, added: “Being part of Icon 24 was incredibly inspiring! It was a real privilege to hear about all the wonderful work occurring across the sector to make a positive change, and to chat about all things conservation with our members and like-minded individuals. In the words of one of our closing speakers Jane Henderson, let’s “be brave, speak up and remember the joy”.
Thank you to everyone who made Icon24 so memorable and inspiring. We can't wait to see you again at Icon26 in Edinburgh!
