We are looking for a Paintings Conservator with experience in the care and conservation of a wide range of paintings to join our conservation team.

  • You will be responsible for the care and conservation of Paintings within NML’s collections.
  • You will make items in NML’s collections accessible by contributing to displays and exhibitions, interpretation, research, public and specialist enquiries, online information and other publications.
  • You will support NML’s programme of national and international loans out by assessing, preparing and advising on paintings requested for loan
  • You will assist with the management of the paintings conservation studio including equipment maintenance, budgeting for and purchasing conservation materials, carrying out relevant Health and Safety risk assessments

What you’ll be doing – Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out assessments and surveys, treatment and research of NML’s painting collections to a high standard. Ensure that all work and documentation is undertaken accurately and to appropriate standards.
  • Contribute to the documentation of the collections on the NML database (Mimsy XG) and in the object history files relating to condition assessments and treatments, including recording methods, sequences and results of treatments, work records, condition reports, record photography and the results of scientific analyses.
  • Provide expert advice to colleagues on display, storage, environmental conditions, handling, packing and transport of paintings
  • Advise and assist relevant curators & registrars in considering requests for loans of paintings from NML’s collections, and preparing paintings for travel and display.
