Coronavirus guidance

Getting in touch with us

We know that this is a challenging time for everyone as we all adjust to new ways of working as a result of Government advice on social distancing. We are committed to keeping Icon staff and members safe and to supporting our members and all those working across the cultural heritage sector who are affected by the impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. It is evident that Government support will be needed to ensure the survival of our world-leading cultural heritage sector and those who work within it. Icon will continue to monitor developments and take steps to support its members and the profession.

In light of Government advice, and in consultation with staff, Icon has closed the London office until further notice. Icon staff are working from home acording to our usual working patterns and will continue to be contactable by email. Calls to Icon office phones are being diverted to a temporary number but our capacity to answer is limited, so please email the relevant member of staff directly to ensure a prompt response. In the meantime, members may continue to renew their membership through the members portal of the Icon website.

Icon CPD events and other meetings are being converted into online events where possible, though some have had to be cancelled. Many of Icon's Groups and Networks are also replacing their physical lectures and seminars with online events. Please check our events calendar for details.

Actions from Icon

Coronavirus: Icon Policy Activity
We are working hard to lobby for support for conservation and the conservation profession with Governments and decision makers. You can find more information, as well as copies of our statements and letters related to the Coronavirus pandemic, here.

Coronavirus: Continuing Professional Development
We are increasing our CPD activities and supporting Icon Groups and Networks to deliver CPD for their members. You can find CPD resources and ideas that we've compiled, as well as forms to share your ideas here.

Coronavirus: Collections Care
Icon has written to leaders across the UK nations calling for advice, investment, advocacy and skills development so that collections are cared for at this challenging time. To date, we have written to many bodies urging that they acknowledge the current risks to collections in closed or partially closed institutions. You can find more information and support for conservation professionals here.

Coronavirus: Historic Buildings and Sites
As we begin to emerge from lockdown, several challenges need to be tackled in order to ensure that conservators and others can work safely on site. To support our members we have collated all the guidance available to us here.

Coronavirus: Business Support
Icon’s recent Coronavirus survey indicated that many conservators are awaiting further clarification of available Government support measures. To help our members and the wider sector, we have compiled a digest of available support for businesses and freelancers here.

Icon Online Community
We are helping members to communicate and exchange ideas and support. We have now opened the Icon Online Community via Discord. This is a free communication platform that allows users to chat with each other in custom channels by text, video or voice - as well as share ideas, resources and feedback. You can find out more and join here(Please note this page is only accessible to Icon members.)

Sources of advice and guidance

In addition to the summary pages noted above you can find a library of links to sources of advice and guidance in the tables below. We continue to update the tables but some links may change. Please let us know if you spot an error or identify anything that's missing.

We are also interested in any other suggestions for things that we can do to support members and the profession. Share your feedback and ideas by email and please bookmark this page and check back for further updates.
